Shaping the World through Drafting Technology

Behind every product, building and engineering or development process are drawings and models created by someone using techniques and principles taught in drafting classes. Studying drafting involves learning advanced math and drawing techniques to create 3D building and objects. At Berks Technical Institute, our Drafting Technology Program is designed to teach you mechanical, civil, electrical and architectural CAD techniques. The program itself is divided into three parts in order to expose you to the basic principles behind drafting, mechanical and architectural drafting.

An externship component may also be available. With an externship you’ll have the opportunity to practice your skills in a work setting while also getting the work experience employers are looking for. But Drafting Technology is so much more than just classrooms and exercises.

Drafters are the mapmakers of our world. Together with Architects and Engineers, Drafting Technologists create and construct using state-of-the-art software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, Revit and SketchUp and advanced technology like the Maker Bot Smart Extruder 3D printer.

You will be responsible for creating the design prototypes for machines, airplanes and construction works such as dams, antenna towers and bridges. As a Drafting Technologist, no matter what specific discipline you may be employed in, you provide illustrations and guidelines by which products are manufactured and structures are built as well as:

  • Supervise and train other Technologists, Technicians and Drafters
  • Develop and prepare engineering drawings, plans, diagrams or layouts from sketches
  • Operate computer-assisted drafting equipment or a conventional drafting station
  • Develop and prepare engineering designs and drawings from preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specification sheets and other data
  • Operate computer-assisted design (CAD) and drafting workstations
  • Develop and prepare design sketches
  • Complete documentation packages and produce drawing sets
  • Check and verify design drawings to conform to specifications and design data
  • Write technical reports
  • Prepare contracts and tender documents

The Drafting Technology Program at BTI is designed specifically to prepare you for several career options including Architectural Drafter and Civil Drafter. An Architectural Drafter uses the design software to prepare detailed drawing and digital renderings of architectural designs while Civil Drafters create maps and guidelines for civil engineering projects while also visiting job sites to gather measurements, evaluate cost estimates and manage contracts.

If you are a detail-oriented worker who is able to concentrate for long stretches of time, are interested in how things are put together from concept to implementation, work well with a team and have a desire to change the infrastructure of the world around you, you are a perfect candidate for the Drafting Technology program.
